Prep Work

Before you even turn on the vacuum cleaner, be sure to take a look at your floor and pick up any loose bits that might disrupt the vacuum cleaner. If you see pennies, paperclips, push pins, or other small items scattered across your floor, be sure to grab them. Sucking these items up with your vacuum cleaner could lead to a jammed or otherwise damaged vacuum.

Watch the Vacuum Bag

As you’re vacuuming, be sure to keep an eye on the vacuum bag. You want to try to avoid letting this get fuller than about three-quarters of the way. Once the bag fills past this level, it will typically run slower and provide less suction, reducing its effectiveness in cleaning your carpet flooring.

The Beater Bar

Many vacuum cleaners come with what is called a beater bar. This tool agitates carpet fibers to help your flooring release dirt and debris so that it can be suctioned up. This is great for many carpets, but can negatively affect other types of flooring. Try to find a vacuum with a beater bar that can be turned on and off, as this will allow you to decide how and when to use it. Avoid utilizing the beater bar if vacuuming natural fiber, loop pile, or long fiber carpets. All three of these can be adversely affected by the harsh agitation of the beater bar.

Multi-Direction Vacuuming

One of the best ways to ensure an even and thorough cleaning of your carpet flooring is to vacuum in two different directions. So, if you vacuum your floors from north to south first, switch directions then and finish the job by vacuuming east to west. This helps to clean any spots you may have missed, and it will also move the carpet fibers around more, helping to shake loose any trapped dirt or debris that can then be sucked up by the vacuum.
